Comment:
Ok, let's face it: McCartney's post-Beatles work has been riddled with an excess of mediocrity, particularly after the demise of Wings in its various incarnations ("Say Say Say" or "Ebony & Ivory" anyone?). But sue me -- there are also the occasional glimmers of the pop genius he once was. Paul & Linda's Ram album was the first rock album I ever heard back as a kid, an inadvertent purchase by my parents amidst the Carpenters and Herb Alpert 8-track tapes, and it still holds a special place in my heart. And London Town is vastly underestimated. Plus, "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" is far ballsier and worthier of BBC banishment than, say, "God Save The Queen." So there you are.
Feedback:
Hey, I LOVE McCartney's work through about half of "Tug of War". Great choices all around here. Check out my three-volume "People pass me by on my imaginary street" series and compare notes... I'd love to hear what you think.
Rob: Your set is top notch, per usual, but, while I'm glad to be an unabashed Paul apologist, even I would have a hard time with three volumes. I may have gone with two (if I had a copy of Back to the Egg on cd that certainly would have happened), but three volumes requires the inclusion of way too much material from Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway, not to mention his post-Wings career, which, alas, I think is of limited value even as kitsch. But always nice to see someone who appreciates the cheesy joy of Ram.
Believe it or not, Ram was my first rock album as well. I used to play it everyday after school. I listened to it for the first time in years last month and it still sounds great (except for maybe Linda's vocals!) Great compilation BTW!
Kudos for the mix popkulcherist...! I personally like quite a bit of "Back to the Egg". "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey' may have been the first song where I was determined to "own" it as soon as possible.., thus beginning a lifetime love affair with pop music.
I *love* Wild Life and think Red Rose Speedway is underrated, as well. Glad to hear you give a verbal nod to Back to the Egg, though, because that's a real favorite of mine.
Fun to see others initiated into rock by "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," the first song I truly loved as a kid. Oddly enough (or maybe not), it's also the first non-Disney song that my two kids (4 & 6) have fallen in love with, demanding that I play that "hands across the water song" every time we get in the car. So now we can start working our way towards Sonic Youth... [by the way, Rob Conroy, I sent you an e-mail and I received some weird spam in return, but if you'd be up for any trading drop me an e-mail).
Glad to see someone else likes "Magneto And Titanium Man." I'd go really heavy on "Ram" stuff though.
