When Jay-Z and Beyoncé dropped by a Grizzly Bear gig in the summer of 2009 — soaking up such shimmering singles as "Two Weeks" — it was as if hip-hop and R&B's royal family finally gave indie rock a proper seal of approval. Listen closely, though, and you'll find a year that constantly blurred the line between what's underground and mainstream, from the high-concept heavy metal of Mastodon ("Oblivion") and post-grunge pop of Silversun Pickups ("Panic Switch") to the dance-floor-filling crossover cuts of Phoenix ("1901") and Franz Ferdinand ("No You Girls").
