Neville Brothers
Comment:
Everybody knows that jazz got its jump-start in the Crescent City about 100 or so years ago, but not five people in 100 will identify New Orleans as the birthplace of funk. And if funk could be said to have four fathers as its forefathers, they'd all be brothers . . . named Neville. Canadian-transplant producer Daniel Lanois brings out the brothers' spooky, swampy juju in the title track from their 1989 album Yellow Moon. But if you really want to dig down below the surface, right back to their second-line roots, check out the Meters (led by the eldest Neville, Art) in "Hey Pocky A-way." And if there was ever any lingering question as to whether their funk plays outside bayou country, just check out their blackened-catfish retooling of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle." Game, set, match. In Next Steps, we'll hear the Nevilles' spiritual side, from a reworking of the most famous prayer in all of Christianity to a rarely played Dylan delicacy.
