Comment:

In that funny little interval between the moment that big bands blew their last breath and rock 'n' roll redefined every rule in pop culture, a small (but sincere) group of former jazz singers dominated the charts. On the men's side, it was the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, and Bing Crosby; on the ladies', it was song thrushes along the lines of Jo Stafford, Dinah Shore, and Rosemary Clooney. More a natural singer with a swing in her voice than a technical wizard, Clooney romped through the '50s with more than a half-dozen Top 10 hits, a tabloid-headline marriage to actor José Ferrer, several hit movies, and a television show to her credit. The post-rock years were not so hospitable, but she hit her stride again in the'70s, reuniting with longtime friend (and occasional musical partner) Bing Crosby and reinventing herself for a new generation. During the last few years of her life, she got to act with nephew George Clooney on ER, and won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
