Comment:
The conclusion of the 4-disc chronological Who compendium. The weakest, for obvious reasons, but even the latter-day stuff sounds pretty good in context.
Feedback:
Believe it or not, I might actually want a copy of this volume to get "However Much I Booze" on CD (my Who collection stops--and will always stop--with Quadrophenia). Nice series.
I agree that Quad was their last must-own album (not to mention their best album, though Who's Next is more or less a toss-up). Still, I think By Numbers was pretty great (though parts of it were better suited to a Townshend solo album than to a Who album). Who Are You and It's Hard are both pretty abysmal; Face Dances, taken as a lightweight pop album, has its moments.
Hmmm. Clearly I'm going to disagree with you on their best album. I believe it's "Sell Out", by a landslide. Truth be told, however, I lose interest pretty quickly in the Who after Tommy. It's almost as though there were two Who's - one who wrote brilliant pop gems, played with great bombast and spirit; and another Who that was mostly bombast with weaker (longer and frequently boring) songs. Don't get me wrong, latter-day Who has their moments, but I'm not a big fan post-Tommy. But that's rock snobbery for ya :-)
This is an excellent series. And I am a fan of their latter-day music, primarily for sentimental reasons, but it's still better than a lot of what I was hearing at the time.
An excellent series indeed. Actually it was stuff from the newer albums like It's Hard and Face Dances that drew my attention back in high school, since they were being released at the time. It wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I discovered "Sell Out" (my favorite Who album as well) and "My Generation."
good work...damn those rock snobs and their dumb ass remarks though..."my collection stops and always stops at Quadrophenia" what a bunch of snob ass pretenders
I dunno; I think that anyone who's posted more than, say, a half dozen mixes on this site qualifies as a rock snob... after all, isn't a mix tape just a way of telling someone "your taste sucks, here's what you should REALLY be listening to"? Or maybe that's just me...
Well, it's been repeatedly confirmed that Geoffrey Holland not only has lousy taste, but is a certified ass, as well. "Pretenders" is an interesting phrase... if I felt comfortable letting a dude as patently unstable as Geoffrey anywhere near my record collection, he'd be welcome to see that (*gasp*) my collection DOES stop with "Quadrophenia". ;-) Anyway, I'd like a copy of this, as I said, and I believe I actually was praising this mix.
Incidentally, I just saw the "best album" discussion below and wanted to say that "Sell Out" is definitely my favorite Who album. I'm not all that into either "Who's Next" or "Quadrophenia" anymore, but I do own them still (although I only have "Quad" as a CDR at this point). I like parts of "By Numbers", too, but not enough to shell out the cash for it. You're absolutely right about "Who Are You" and "It's Hard", too.
