Comment:

Everybody knows about the British Invasion and how a bunch of lovable moptops changed the face of rock forever. But the most successful invasions are the ones that come from someplace you'd never expect . . . like an island in the north Atlantic that just barely scrapes the top 20 in size, but continues to dominate rock culture: Ireland. Can't immediately place the Irish rockers on the all-time hit list? How about the biggest band in the world, U2? Or the fireplug of Irish soul, Van Morrison? Or the chieftains of punk folk, the Pogues? Or the alt-rock deities of melodic melancholy, Snow Patrol? For going on five decades, America — no, make that the world — has looked to the Emerald Isle for arena- electrifying anthems, intimately introspective ballads, and the kind of rabble-rousing rock that flows like whisky from the jar . . . and we haven't ever been disappointed.
