Kris Kristofferson
Comment:
Kristofferson has become as famous for his movie roles as his music, but it was the former Rhodes scholar's way with words that put him on the map. His early song "Best of All Possible Worlds" — covered 36 years later by Norah Jones' country band the Little Willies — is teeming with tongue-twisters, triple negatives, and rampaging rhymes that still leave plenty of room for an uproarious outlaw saga of a boozer's brush with the law. Of course, he could cut right to the chase, too, like when he tells honky-tonk haters, in no uncertain terms, what to do with their unwanted opinions on "If You Don't Like Hank Williams." So when he puts down his pen to sing someone else's song, like "American Remains" — the salute to homeland heroes he cut with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson, in supergroup the Highwaymen — you know it's a top-shelf tune.
