Count Basie
Comment:
One of the most amazing things about Basie is how long his reign lasted. In the late '30s the Count Basie Orchestra were the New York jazz scene's roaring young lions, but in the '60s they were still going strong, injecting some swing and bluesy, brassy strut into the ultimate spy-movie anthem "The James Bond Theme" and sidling up to Ella Fitzgerald for a slinky, sexy romp through Duke Ellington's cosmopolitan classic "Satin Doll." But even after Basie himself took his final bow in 1984, his band kept on carrying the torch, and when they back Diane Schuur on a jumpin', jivin' '87 concert recording of "Deedles' Blues," it's clear that the spirit of the Count is still very much alive.
