Comment:

If Duke Ellington provided the jazz orchestra's gray matter, Count Basie was its bouncing, blasting, blood-pumping heart. He took the bluesy lessons he learned backing Bennie Moten's band in Kansas City and adapted them to a harder, tighter, more urban approach, with razor-sharp riffs capable of inflicting bodily harm if incorrectly applied. At the same time, his downright sensual swing feel had a huge impact on jazz and R&B bandleaders of the '40s and '50s, and big-band arrangers like Billy May, not to mention providing the crucial breaths between blazes of glory in bebop's manic makeup. Besides cutting jazz standards that would be reinterpreted by generations of powerful players, the Basie band swung with some of America's greatest vocalists, from Ella and Sammy to Tony and Frank, providing them with the most sympathetic musical partners a singer could want. We've tackled the daunting task of digging through the decades of Basie's luminous legacy to isolate the essential moments; all you have to do is swing.
