If there's anything at all to the old saying about judging a man by the company he keeps, then Pat Metheny's personal score must be off the charts — the regal roster of his collaborators speaks to his virtuoso skills [i]and[/i] his broad musical mind. "The Red One" is a funked-up guitar-god summit meeting in which Metheny slings licks with fellow all-star axeman John Scofield. The six-string sorcerer reimagines the molecular makeup of music itself by heading for the stratosphere with avant-jazz godfather Ornette Coleman on "Kathelin Gray." And when he sidles up to longtime Ornette bassist Charlie Haden for the artful, acoustic Americana of "Message to a Friend," it's easy to believe in the much-mythologized miracle of musical telepathy.
