Comment:
No doubt about it, George Strait's claimed the title King of Country, but he wasn't the only one who hoped to trade his hat for a crown back in the day. Former bluegrass wunderkind Keith Whitley's "I'm No Stranger to the Rain" snagged the #1 slot from Strait's "Baby's Gotten Good At Goodbye" in 1989, but his stormy career came to a tragic end less than a month later, a victim of acute alcohol poisoning at 34. Where George's "My Infinite Love" — featured in our Love Songs playlist — plays it Strait, Randy Travis' GRAMMY®-winning devotional decree, "Forever and Ever, Amen," plants its lyrical tongue like a plug of chew — firmly in cheek. And, finally, triple-threat writer/producer/performer (and ex-Johnny Cash son-in-law) Rodney Crowell two-steps his way to new-traditionalist Nirvana in "I Couldn't Leave You If I Tried." From Vince Gill & Reba McEntire to Dwight Yoakam and Kathy Mattea, we've got all the tradition-makers — and tradition-breakers — who shared the airwaves and arenas with George.
