Comment:
If you ever wondered how George Strait built the bridge between classic and modern country, look no further for the blueprints; this music, these musicians, taught the master. You can actually hear country music coming down from the hills and taking its first, tentative steps into the bright city lights as Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys serve up a Tex-Mex combo plate of drums and horns with a side of Western swing on "New San Antonio Rose." The Okie from Muskogee, Merle Haggard — actually a native of Bakersfield, California — isn't quite so enchanted with the urban cowboy life and yearns for some Big Sky, range-ridin' simplicity in "Big City." And if ever a singer defined city slick, it's Strait's longtime hero, crooner Frank Sinatra, jet-setting his way through Cole Porter's "I Get a Kick Out of You." From fellow Texan Doug Sahm to Hank Williams, the Alabama kid who defined Nashville, we've got all the sounds and styles that shaped one of country's all-time Hall of Famers.
