Comment:

As anyone who's ever covered the band knows, there's more than one way to skin a Metallica song. There's the art-of-the-shred approach, a riff-by-riff reminder of just how flawless these tracks are to begin with. Make that flawless and frantic, as Motörhead ("Whiplash"), Trivium ("Master of Puppets"), and Machine Head ("Battery") prove by tearing into thrash metal's riotous roots. Then there's Flotsam & Jetsam's 50-yard-dash rendition of "Damage, Inc.," a tense Master of Puppets tune that was originally tracked the winter before Jason Newsted left Flotsam & Jetsam for, yes, Metallica. And let's not forget Apocalyptica, a Finnish quartet that reduced "The Unforgiven" to nothing but chilling cello arrangements and mournful melodies. While that quartet's spare interpretation revealed just how spooky its source material is, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' bullet-train version of "Enter Sandman" delivers a nightmarish, teeth-gnashing spin on ska-core. And it doesn't stop there: from Dee Dee Ramone to Disturbed, from Anthrax to Agent Orange, only the best and baddest cover Metallica — and we've got their best and baddest covers right here.
