Comment:

Metallica didn't just throttle the thrash-metal circuit in the early '80s — they grabbed every last denim vest by its back patches and demanded to be heard. Now that they're plowing through sold-out stadiums with all the subtlety of a four-man steamroller, we've connected the chords between decades of lawless live material to create the ultimate concert experience. That's right — you now have an excuse to mosh with friends right in the comfort of your living room, beginning with "The Ecstasy of Gold," an Ennio Morricone cover/longtime intro song (since 1983) that leaves the guns at home in favor of cocked guitars. Everything's a riff-slingin' blur from then on, as the band shifts between the frenzied fan favorites of The Metallica Collection ("Whiplash," "Battery," "Creeping Death") and the sinister symphonic metal of S&M ("Until It Sleeps," "Master of Puppets," "Fuel"). In the words of James Hetfield — when he isn't howling or hammering his signature ESP six-string, that is — "Come on, man!" This is the greatest Metallica live set that never was, and it ain't gonna let up 'til you get your dose of dive-bomb hooks and speaker-slammin' drum solos.
