Comment:

When James Hetfield shouts, "Gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which I desire" on Metallica's Reload album, he might as well be talking about the unbelievable original versions of cuts the band's covered over the past couple of decades. One longstanding obsession on that crate-digging expedition is Motörhead — and not just because Lemmy's one of the baddest men ever to stalk a stage. For one thing, the power-trio practically invented speed metal, leading Metallica to devote an entire EP — 1995's Motörheadache, which is tacked onto the tail-end of the Garage Inc. album — to four of their fiercest pedal-to-the-metal pieces. Which makes perfect sense, given Metallica's undying devotion to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (crank up also: Maiden's "Run to the Hills" and "Remember Tomorrow," just the way the band first heard 'em). For a taste of the not-so-obvious, check out Thin Lizzy ("Whiskey in the Jar") and, believe it or not, Nick Cave ("Loverman"). And that's not all: Metallica also pulled from the likes of Blue Öyster Cult and Blitzkrieg, Mercyful Fate and the Misfits, and more. But don't take our word for it — check out all the originals . . . before they got manhandled by Metallica.
