Comment:

We know, we know — it's hard to look at Metallica as a bunch of fanboys when they're one of the world's biggest rock bands. But here's the thing: they bonded over stacks of records from the very beginning, when drummer Lars Ulrich's want ad made it abundantly clear that mascara-packing pretty boys need not apply. Instead, the group knew exactly what they wanted — to storm hard rock's glossy gates and make the arena-ready anthems of Maiden ("Run to the Hills") and Priest ("Rapid Fire") even more brutal. And what better place to search for inspiration than the raw power of the Stooges ("Down On the Street"), the hey-ho-let's-go hooks of the Ramones ("I Wanna Be Sedated"), and the rapid-fire riffs of Diamond Head ("Lightning to the Nations")? Tearing through those songs at rehearsals must've been like sparking a dozen powder kegs and watching the place go up in flames. And yet Metallica's search-and-destroy mission didn't end there — they built up an arsenal of battering-ram tracks from influences as diverse as Deep Purple and Discharge, Mercyful Fate and the Misfits — all of whom are ready to ravage your iPod right here.
