I won't reopen the debate held here when Rob Conroy posted a similar mix a few months ago. Just a brief declaration of my own views: (1) Their psychedelic period was far more interesting than their R&B period; (2) The first two R&B-tinged albums were easily on par with the Stones, no better, no worse; (3) The third album, Emotions, doesn't deserve the critical disdain it receives -- as far as moves into Britpop go, it's no Rubber Soul or Kink's Face to Face or Aftermath, but it has its charms; (4) the landmark SF Sorrow may be dated and hokey as a concept album (oh, like Tommy isn't?), but musically it holds up as a stellar example of goofy psychedelic experimentalism; (5) any band that records wonderfully mediocre psychedelia and garage band songs for B-movie soundtracks under the moniker Electric Banana is too cool for words; (6) their best album, Parachute, is an overlooked gem that belongs in every collection; and (7) like others, my familiarity with the band ends there, as I didn't find their 70's output worth buying.

...thought you'd include "Pretty Things going to Hell", off Hours.
The term 'Pretty Things', obviously a favorite of Mr. Jones'; used it on Hours, Hunky Dory and The 1st Tin Machine album (and I'm sure @ least 1 more time, elsewhere). This mix looks very cool!

I'm with ya. This is a kick-ass mix! Very underrated band, in their prime.

...I'm with ya' too! Damn fine band! Sorely overlooked...., I might take "Defecting Grey".., always conveys what they must've sounded like live. (Lords know the studio couldn't contain the sonics!) Great Marc!

Damn! I almost missed this, thinking it was a Bowie mix (I respect him, but was never much of a fan). It wasn't until I looked at the image gallery that I saw it was a Pretty Things mix. Anyway, I'd really love to hear this, especially the Electric Banana cuts. Trust is one of my favorites as well. I almost put it on Pet Soundalikes.

Very cool mix. I'll respond to your statements, though, in a friendly fashion: 1) Their R 'n' B albums, to me, are infinitely better than the psych records. 2) Said R 'n' B albums, however, are not even within shouting distance of any Stones record besides the first two. 3) Emotions isn't horrific, I'd agree. 4) Tommy is idiotic as a concept but is (once again, to me) *way* better musically than S.F. Sorrow. 5) True, the Pretty Things score high on the cool factor, period. 6) Parachute is great; it's my third-fave ot theirs after the first two (my favorite is Get the Picture). 7) Hear, hear!
