In a pre-Britpop era when the roar of grunge pretty much ruled the airwaves, the unassuming Southern California duo of David Roback and Hope Sandoval whispered a wistful alternative to "alternative" as dream-pop purveyors Mazzy Star. Sandoval was the honey-voiced waif floating through the melancholy clouds gathered by Roback's guitar, and for a golden moment, they even made it work in the mainstream: the gorgeous "Fade into You" cracked the charts on both sides of the Atlantic in '94. Here we've scooped up the sweetest cuts from the bands three studio albums to date, and we've also thrown in a small-hours selection of tracks by spinter-project, the Warm Inventions, for which Sandoval hooked up with My Bloody Valentine's drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig: "Blanchard" is a standout from 2009's [i]Through the Devil Softly[/i].
