Comment:

It's Shiva, leading the cosmic dance. It's Ganesha, the elephant-headed god with a broken tusk, removing obstacles. It's blue-skinned Vishnu, the all-pervading essence. It's mother-goddess Shakti, the divine force. It's the oldest major religion in the world, with roots in the Iron Age, and more than a billion followers worldwide today. We start our excursion into Hindi devotional music with the German-born, classically trained Deva Premal, gliding through "the mother of the vedas," polishing the "Gayatri Mantra" with a new-age gloss. The 12th-century Sanskrit poet Jayadeva composed "Dheera Sameere" as part of his lyrical epic The Gita Govinda; in this almost raga-like setting, Raghunath Panigrahi lovingly ladles his vocals over a sitar, flute, and percussion as he recounts the tale of a tryst between the god Krishna and his gopi lover, Radha. And anyone familiar with Bollywood music will immediately recognize the loping tabla beat of "Jai Jai Jai Hanuman Ki," a joy-filled bhajan to the Hindu monkey god from the much beloved (and multi-platinum-selling) Anup Jalota. From Lata Mangeshkar to Jai Uttal, from the Yogi Hari to Nirvanananda, we've traveled the entire Indian subcontinent and beyond to bring you the songs that honor the thousands of gods — and delight the millions of followers — of the world's third-largest religion.
