Mano Negra
Artist | Song |
Comment:
Taking their name from an Andalucian anarchist group, Mano Negra was formed in Paris in 1986 by Manu Chao, his brother Tonio, and cousin Santiago Casariego. The Spanish natives were renowned for their chaotic live show, which drew on the punk spirit of the Clash and welded together rock, rap, flamenco, and Algerian rai. Mano Negra's debut album Patchanka appeared in 1988 and featured their first hit, "Mala Vida." With several English-language tracks, the 1991 release King of Bongo helped the group garner a wider Anglo following, but it was in South America that Mano Negra really took off; legendary tours by train and cargo ship accompanied by free concerts at railway stations and ports made the group populist icons. Front man Manu Chao later found platinum success as a solo artist and in 2007 won a GRAMMY® Award for the song "Me Llaman Calle" from La Radiolina.
