Harry Nilsson
Comment:
For all his artistic achievements, Nilsson was always a screwball at heart, gleefully launching into deeply weird detours from the path of pop perfection. The man who made millions weep with his chart-topping ballads could also turn out kooky fare like "Garbage Can Ballet," an ode to eating out of trash cans that's part of his soundtrack for bizarro '60s cult classic film Skidoo. His 1975 "Down By the Sea" is like a sonic psychic's prediction of The Little Mermaid soundtrack as done by Tom Waits. And you couldn't ask for a better embodiment of Nilsson's notorious, year-long "lost weekend" of L.A. spent carousing with John Lennon than the interstellar Cheech & Chong-isms of "The Flying Saucer Song," from the Lennon-produced Pussy Cats.
