John Birks Gillespie took jazz's swing-era template and twisted it into strange and beautiful new shapes. Alongside the likes of Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, he boldly broke the old-school rules of harmony and melody in the crucible of Harlem clubs like Minton's and Monroe's to create bebop. A virtuosic trumpeter as well as a revolutionary composer/bandleader, Dizzy followed his muse through six decades of music making, and left a daunting legacy to absorb. But that's where we come in — we've followed all of the man's twists and turns, from his trailblazing Big Bang of bop to his excursions into international waters with Afro-Cuban rhythm riots and summery Brazilian bossa nova breezes.
