Comment:

The Hardest Working Man in Show Business had the industry's busiest backing band, and when they got a turn under the spotlight, they knew — 'cause James had schooled them — how to shine. Original Flame vocalist Bobby Byrd, known as the Godfather's Godfather for springing Brown from juvenile detention in the '50s, carves off a chicken-fried slab of funk in his 1971 hit, "I Know You Got Soul." Brown's musical director and arranger, trombonist Fred Wesley, leads the J.B.'s in "Gimme Some More," a laid-back shuffle-beat jam that features Wesley revving up his horn to air-raid-siren heights. And Bootsy Collins, called in to back Brown after the Famous Flames got put out, wacka-wacka-wah-wahs all over his trademark bass groove, percolating like a kettle full of sweat in "Stretchin' Out (In a Rubber Band)." From Lyn Collins to Maceo & The Macks, from Anna King to the FunkMasters, we're shakin' loose the richest, ripest musical fruits from J.B.'s family tree.
