Comment:
I know, nothing too surprising here -- just a straight chronological romp through the obvious choices. I'd considered a more expansive, 2-cd mix that would delve into some of the live stuff, outtakes, and lesser tracks (and avoided fading out "Sister Ray" halfway through), but I opted for something more useful as a primer for the uninitiated (as well as something I'd personally want to listen to on a regular basis). Maybe if they get around to releasing deluxe editions of the 2nd and 3rd albums like they've done for the others I'll reconsider. Meanwhile, having just burned this last night and previewed it on the drive in to work this morning, I'm glad to report that they sound every bit as brilliant 30+ years later (though I've never been as drawn to the Nico vocals), and I can still marvel at how the same mad genius managed to deliver the evil murk of "Heroin" and "Sister Ray," the sheer beauty of "Pale Blue Eyes," and the perfect indie-pop of "Sweet Jane." Cover art filched from some Bowie website.
Feedback:
hmmm...since it's for "beginners" i guess i won't complain too loudly about the very small contribution from White Light/White Heat. I find that to be their most difficult record to digest, but often times i think it's my favorite.
I cut "Lady Godiva's Operation" for space. "The Gift," of course, is a hoot, but not necessarily something that merits the same repeat listens as their "hits."
I'm sure we could quibble on track listings, but what's the point? There's not a bad song here. I'm interested in hearing what you think of my double-disc "Free to find another illusion" series, though.
I like Rob's 2-cd mix, of course, though I see that one more as a fan's favorite compendium than as an overview for the uninitiated. (I think the omission of "Heroin," "Sweet Jane," and "Rock & Roll" from Rob's mix makes that pretty clear; I, too, tend to listen to those songs less frequently because they're so familiar, but I couldn't see making a mix without them if I was hoping to turn some friend on to the band.)
Oh, I know. But I'm not presenting my VU mixes as primers. Those are all great songs, but I just don't like them (or listen to them) as much as those on my mixes.
