Comment:
A two disc set of Genesis during the Peter Gabriel years. While my taste generally leans towards post-punk indie pop, and I have no use for most prog, I have no shame in still deriving great (if infrequent) enjoyment out of my old Genesis collection. Yes, their pre-Trespass work was fairly abysmal, but it has its charms; and, yes, Lamb was bloated and pretentious, but also had a handful of choice nuggets. And in between was some pretty cool stuff. So unlike others in the AOTM fold, I wouldn't call them a guilty pleasure. If anything, my guilty pleasure would be some of the post-Gabriel, Phil Collins-helmed work, which, while ultimately becoming a complete joke, was not quite the disaster some profess (Duke and Abacab actually featuring a few decent stabs at innovative if banal pop). But that's for another day & another mix.
Feedback:
Nice. I love this period of Genesis and like most of Duke and some of Abacab, as well. I also like the pre-Trespass stuff a lot. Check out my "I've got sunshine in my stomach mix"...
Don't know how I missed this earlier - I"m right with you on this era of Genesis. It's pop meets folk meets classical meets prog. And it all ups to great songs and inspired performances. Nice work.
I love Gabriel's Genesis and I'm not ashamed to admit it! A lot of people slag it off as overblown and pretentious but somehow Radiohead is currently "The Greatest Band In The World!" Go figure. (not putting down Radiohead, I love them too but you get my point...)
Whoa, I can't believe I didn't notice this first time 'round. Nice stuff. I'm a little different than you in that I like prog rock, but I too love Gabriel-era Genesis. Despite its pretty big problems, it's still awesome. Good to see it getting recognition.
