Wooden Shjips
Comment:
In creating Wooden Shjips back in 2003, lynchpin member Ripley Johnson executed one of the boldest and most daring ideas in modern rock — namely, to create envelope-pushing, out-there sounds using a posse of cohorts with no proven musical skills: naivety, he thought, would be the key to originality. What could have ended up a godawful mess actually worked a treat. When the San Francisco-based band dropped its debut single (on 10-inch vinyl) it was instantly clear that they possessed more than enough creativity and raw talent to attract the world at large to their experiment: check out the pole-axing psychedelic beats on "Shrinking Moon for You" and the mesmerising lo-fi whirlwind "Death's Not Your Friend". A variety of odds and sods (released digitally as a two volume collection of hard-to-find singles) would follow, betraying a reverence for drone rock, Krautrock and garage rock. Their self-titled full-length debut arrived in 2007.
