Jared Leto has disproved the general rule that bands featuring successful Hollywood-istas are little more than misguided "yeah-whatever" indulgences — the [i]Fight Club[/i] and [i]Requiem for a Dream[/i] actor formed 30 Seconds to Mars with his older brother Shannon (drummer) in 1998, and has seen his star in the music world rise steadily under a gathering tide of post-grunge, screamo, and hard rock. After highlighting 2002's self-titled debut with long-burners like "Oblivion," the band engineered its breakthrough with [i]A Beautiful Lie[/i] (2005) — a powerful firestorm crammed with heartfelt amp-scorchers, notably "Attack" and "The Kill" — before delivering progressive third album [i]This Is War[/i] in 2009: in a savvy marketing move, fans were asked to send in their ideas for cover artwork while, musically, the release edges confidently towards the epic.
