Comment:
It's almost impossible to overestimate — or overstate — George Jones' asteroid-like impact on country music; pretty much every serious singer who's stepped behind a mic owes the man a debt, one freely acknowledged in some totally unexpected places. During the very same sessions that delivered the new-wave anthem "Less Than Zero," Elvis Costello turned his bespectacled gaze from pop-packed punk to honky-tonk in "Stranger in the House," a song he wrote for —and later recorded with — Jones himself. Both Keith Richards and Gram Parsons counted themselves as card-carrying members of G.J.'s fan club, and you can practically see his fingerprints all over the Stones' "Far Away Eyes" and the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Sin City." And when neo-trads like Randy Travis and George Strait found country too damn bland, Jones served as a bourbon-soaked beacon, leading them out of the mainstream jungle. From Alan Jackson to Emmylou Harris, we've got all the hellraisers and harmonizers who've followed in George's gargantuan footsteps.
