Here we rewind to Dr. Dog's charmingly rough-edged early years with self-released sophomore album [i]Toothbrush[/i] (2002) — beneath the percussive kitchen sink clatter of "Adeline," there's evidently a sophisticated pop sensibility at work, especially in the hummable line "Adeline, you look just like your mother," while the evident imperfections on "How Dare" (ragged backing vocals, overall muffling, scruffy strumming) only make the jewel shine brighter. As we move on through kooky sing-along "California," from 2006 EP [i]Takers and Leavers[/i], to the tighter feel of layered tracks like "Mirror, Mirror," it's clear that bigger budgets have only enhanced the band's strengths.
