Bertie Blackman
Comment:
Singer-songwriter Bertie (Beatrice) Blackman is one sharp artist, whose three-album career trajectory to date has revealed a wise, creatively intense head on young shoulders. Perhaps it was her bohemian East Sydney upbringing (Dad is artist Charles Blackman), or the fact that she started learning African percussion instruments before her teens. Whatever the reason, we've seen her evolve in leaps and bounds as the folk-channelling, inner-city live draw who debuted with Headway in 2004, then rocked up her mix with Black (2006) — feel the heat of "Fast Bitch" — before delivering career high point so far, 2009's electro-boosted Secrets and Lies. The album spawned standout singles "Byrds of Prey" and "Black Cats," and lent itself to a handful of superb remixes, including the cleverly textured Mic Newman treatment of "Town of Sorrow." In 2010, she covered Siouxie and the Banshees' "Peek-a-Boo," and the future could hardly look any brighter.
