Comment:

I love these two bands. I've seen them both live in the last year. Beulah was better by far. They were a lot of fun. I imagine The Apples sounded quite different live a few years ago as opposed to now. Anyone who's heard Velocity of Sound knows what I mean. They're much dirtier and noisy now. Live, it sounded chaotic and shrill. The studio does them a world of good. Anyway, these are some of my favorite tracks, though I love them all.

Yeah, the Apples clearly rely on the studio for their sound - live, they're something of a mess. Still, great songs, eh? Nice collection of these two. Funny, I never really considered them as that similar, but I guess they are, aren't they?

I like PopKulchers "I Love Beulah, She Loves the Minders" mix a lot too... I saw Beulah play live at the Troubadour, and truth be told, I liked the opening band, Mazarin, a lot better... even if Quentin Stolzfus seemed... just a little bit strung out (maybe that's just my imagination). Umm... I like the picks on here a lot, especially for Beulah, my one question... where are the "Fun Trick Noisemaker" tracks, Apples-wise?!

I also enjoy The Minders. I've seen Beulah twice, once with Mazarin as the opening act. I thought Beulah were great. Not to start a fight, but I recall disliking Mazarin quite intensely. A wall of noise a la My Bloody Valentine without the attention to song structure or melody. I had a couple Fun Trick Noisemaker tracks on here, but in the end, I chopped them. I wanted some other tracks on here instead. I like the album, but I'm not in love with it like I am Tone Soul and The Discovery of.... --Matt

Yeah, Mazarin is a little more shoegazer than bands like Beulah and Apples, and that side especially shows in concert, although there is quite a bit of melody and structure to most of their songs. Their stuff is poppier than, say, Broken Social Scene, which we both obviously like a lot.
