Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
Comment:
Ariel Pink is so gloriously eccentric that we tend to categorise him using the scene labels with which he's associated — freak folk, New Weird America, chillwave — but it's generally best to view these pigeon-holes as portals into his strange and intriguing pop-rockin' world, rather than as destinations in themselves. Raised and schooled in the surreal environs of suburban Beverly Hills, young Ariel Marcus Rosenberg developed strong word-of-mouth over a series of lo-fi home-recorded albums (tagged the Haunted Graffiti series, a moniker also used for his band) during the first decade of the 21st Century: early highlights include the dazed and cleverly confused "Good Kids Make Bad Grown Ups" and the spectral, dissonant "Strange Fires", both from The Doldrums. A move out of the bedroom and into the studio came with his late-2009 signing to 4AD, on which label 2010's excellent Before Today was released.
