Legacy - The World of Diddy
Comment:
Here's how ahead of the game Diddy's been since the beginning: way back in 1993, he reeled in his three stars-in-training — Mary J. Blige, the Notorious B.I.G., and K-Ci of Jodeci — for a New Jack Swing remix of "What's the 411?" A classic slice of hip-hop soul, its hooks can be heard all over chart-climbing singles like the "ReMarqable Remix" of "Let's Get Married." That beat-backed duet drops Run-DMC (hear: a slick "It's Like That" sample and a guest appearance from the Reverend himself) in the same room as Jagged Edge — a group that has more than a couple of things in common with another Diddy protege, 112. Club-ready rap/R&B crossovers aren't the only legacy Diddy began leaving behind in the mid-'90s, either. While Jim Jones' "We Fly High" features a Harlem native with swagger to spare (sound familiar?), manservant-to-MC-and-more Fonzworth Bentley's rubber-soled "Everybody" tears a page or two from his former boss' hit-making book. (Kinda like how Diddy once learned the ropes from Uptown Records founder Andre Harrell.) And the Diddy descendants don't stop there; they include everyone from Cam'Ron to Ray J, from Juelz Santana to J. Cole.
