Comment:
It's hard to believe now that he's one of the world's biggest hip-hop stars, but there was a time when no one — not even his partner in rhyme, Jay-Z — wanted to co-sign Kanye West's newfound rap career. But everything changed once he delivered The College Dropout, as hit singles like "All Falls Down" and "Jesus Walks" made it safe to be a sensitive MC who cares more about designer sneakers than Scarface fantasies. We're talking block-rockin' tracks that aren't just brutal; they're brutally honest. Take Wale, for example: While he's down with the gritty disco grooves of D.C.'s go-go scene, the shimmering synths and Hollywood Babylon hooks of "90210" reveal a cautionary tale about a "regular girl with celebrity dreams." Meanwhile, Kid Cudi isn't afraid to share his own problems on "Soundtrack 2 My Life," a hazy blend of sci-fi beats and lovelorn lyrics that could've been lifted straight from Kanye's 808s & Heartbreak. Drake is a little less dire on "Best I Ever Had," as the former child actor serves up a summer-in-the-city anthem that sounds as confident as Kanye looks in a pair of shutter shades. And who can blame him when his influence is being felt throughout the entire hip-hop nation, from Jay Electronica to J. Cole, from B.o.B to Little Brother — all of whom, and more, grab the mic on our Legacy playlist.
