Comment:
Like Sleater-Kinney, Superchunk is one of those truly great bands which I nonetheless find it hard to listen to for extended periods of time. With the exception of maybe On The Mouth, I find them to be a better singles band than album band (though, unlike some longtime fans, I prefer some of their newer, more nuanced power-pop stuff to their early punk days). My collection isn't complete, but this hits most of the band's high points and tosses in a few songs from Mac's side-project Portastatic to keep things interesting (including his breathtaking collaboration with Yo La Tengo on the Brian Eno song "St. Elmo's Fire").
Feedback:
Looks great! I agree with your comments completely. Plenty of excellent choices. I especially love the last song with the Beatlesque "yeah yeahs." Have you heard the EP which has two college djs analyzing the music and lyrics to Hyper Enough? Pretty funny stuff.
This looks wonderful. I sorta lost track of Superchunk along the way. May be time to revisit them.
Hey, I love these guys. :-) (See my "The names were all we knew and the names were all erased" mix.) I generally prefer the older stuff, although I think "Foolish" (which is mid-periodish) is their high-water mark.
