Comment:
Unlike the Gabriel years, which I still find to be one of the few innovative and enjoyable examples of prog/art rock, the Collins years are more of an embarrassment, but a guilty pleasure nonetheless. Or, at least, up through Abacab, after which they became utter dreck. This mix, like their output in the Collins years in general, is a bit schizophrenic, culling both the Gabriel-like extended arty pieces and their more polished adult-oriented-radio pop. Hard to admit, but some of the latter was much better than the former; yes, it's often banal, but they brought more sophistication and class to radio-friendly pop than most artists of the day.
Feedback:
Y'know, I think "wind and wuthering" holds up reasonably well - it's not a drastic step downwards after Gabriel. You seem to have nailed the best tracks from this era. I never need to see Phil Collins' head again, though.
To be honest, Abacab and Three Sides Live are the only two Genesis records I own -- and yes they are guilty pleasures (although my phonograph needle hasn't touched them in over a decade!) Yes, Phil Collins has one of the ugliest mugs in rock history, which is even scarier when you turn him 90 degrees counter-clockwise.
Dear Phil,
Take my advice and start singing Snoopy Come Home and do that silly Charlie Brown dance they do in the those Peanuts cartoons. The role is calling. Think of it as a career boost. Glad to help you with the career.
