Comment:
Some of Ratatat's trappings smack of fly-by-night hipsterism — devil-may-care hirsute stylings; a record collection that takes in Iranian drummers and obscure movie soundtracks; a base in Brooklyn — but a full acquaintance with the electronic duo's body of work since 2003 (the year they changed their name from Cherry) reveals something altogether more solid and permanent. Evan Mast and Mike Stroud first met at a liberal arts college in Saratoga Springs, and have risen from DIY bedroom-studio beginnings, via support slots for the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Super Furry Animals, to become one of the most inventive and entertaining creators of instrumental sounds out there. Highlights so far include the rhythmic intricacies of "Bilar" from 2010's LP4, Kid Cudi collab "Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare)" and fascinating remix assignments for Björk ("Wanderlust") and the Knife ("We Share Our Mother's Health").
