Comment:

Ok, unlike other occasions, this time I am deliberately posting a single-artist mix in response to a comparable posting by my fellow obsessive Rob Conroy. Because unlike most of our mixes, this time around we're come up with hugely different outcomes. Where Rob went with the early stuff, I'm far more keen on the band's mid-80's period, partly because Mark E. Smith's then-wife Brix added a bit of a pop flourish that smoothed some of the rough edges that made the early stuff a bit too abrasive for me, and partly because that was my college dj era so I'm particularly loyal to it. I do have some early highlights here, as well as a couple token selections from the '90's, though I kind of lost interest by then so I don't have much of the latter-day material in my collection. (No, I can't create a mix this quickly in response to an AOTM posting; I made this about a year or two ago, but never got around to posting it here before.)

As someone who is currently compiling a list for a Fall mix disc I can attest to how difficult it is to make even a remotely comprehensive comp. "Elastic Man" and "US 80s-90s" are essential cuts for any comp. I'm waiting for a friend to make a CD version of his 2 cassette best of from a few years ago - he is a much more dedicated Fallcompletist than I am so he had quite a bit to pull from.

Yes, I'm partial to the Brix-era as well. She was the charm that soothed the savage beast. Have you heard the Adult Net (Brix's solo project)? I would be broke if I ever tried to compile every Fall recording. It's much easier being a EBN-OZN completist.

EBN-OZN? Everyone knows Hayzi-Fantasi kicks thier ass! Great stuff here, though I got no love for Brix. Still, I think every Fall LP I've got has something essential on it so it's hard to go wrong here.

damn, this has me stoked! sheeeeeit. great picks all 'round. i can listen to "the classical" a hundred times in succession and not get sick of it. nice job, but don't fear the later 90s stuff -- it's grrrreat!

I remember Adult Net (Brix's side band) having a nice (if by-the-book) take on "Incense and Peppermints" way back. I had a college friend who went to high school with Brix and had many (very scary) stories about her.
