Comment:

A classically trained coloratura soprano, Julie Andrews has a heavenly tone and a seemingly superhuman range that enables gazelle-like melodic leaps. But more than that, she's an actress, and she brings that skill to every song she inhabits. As Eliza Doolittle, the plucky working-class heroine of My Fair Lady, she spins out the sassy sentiments of "Just You Wait" in classic Cockney tones. She takes a gender-bending turn — foreshadowing her Victor/Victoria success — on "Burlington Bertie from Bow," a first-person satire of an English aristocratic wannabe. And she knowingly invests the seemingly innocent "Sweet Polly Plunkett" with the sinister undercurrents that surround its setting in Sondheim's Sweeney Todd.
