Little Richard
Comment:
Every rock 'n' roll piano player out there owes a debt to Little Richard, the Chuck Berry of the 88s. Even before Jerry Lee Lewis, Richard put the piano right up front with the guitars, bashing, banging, and clanging out his thrilling brand of sonic savagery while he wailed, hooted, and hollered, sometimes in a language all his own, but always making his point in no uncertain terms. From his early days with the revved-up R&B band the Upsetters (no relation to the reggae group) to his world-shaking mid-'50s stint with Specialty Records, to his gospel period, and beyond, Little Richard has been rippin' it up for nearly six decades. That's a lotta rockin' to keep track of, but don't sweat it: We've piled up his loudest, proudest moments in a savory stack that climbs higher than his pompadour — all you've got to do is dip in and dig it.
