Phosphorescent
Comment:
Georgia-born New York transplant Matthew Houck, essentially the sole member of Phosphorescent, toured at the dawn of the ’00s under the name Fillup Shack (attracting great press here in the UK), but changed his recording moniker in 2003 for the album A Hundred Times or More, a satisfying addition to the neo-folk canon that invited comparison to Bob Dylan . . . and that’s a touchstone that should never be dished out lightly. 2005’s Aw Come Aw Wry and its follow up Pride confirmed the highest of expectations were justified: check out the sinister melancholy of “Wolves” and busted-flat country of “Joe Tex, These Taming Blues”. 2010’s Here’s to Taking It Easy found Houck expanding his horizons by pulling in a full quota of backup musicians, and the result can be heard to great effect on the album’s nine-minute, tragic-but-uplifting closer, “Los Angeles”.
