Shot through with the classic rock 'n' roll ingredients of sex and death, with a strong hint of gothic Anne Rice-inspired vampirism thrown in for good measure, Concrete Blonde gave us late 20th century alt rock with an exotic-yet-scuzzy Californian twist. Bloodletting, featuring the tragic booze-soaked romance of the band's best known hit, "Joey," remains an album high point, but there's far more to the Johnette Napolitano-led outfit than first meets the eye: check out the mythical Western twang of "Ghost of a Texas Ladies Man," the propulsive Hollywood fury of "It'll Chew You Up and Spit You Out" and their brilliantly judged cover of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows." A solo Napolitano turns up on a couple of Aussie movie soundtracks, in Next Steps.
