Over the course of more than 60 years, Lena Horne evolved from Cotton Club chorus girl to great American artist, and she did it by staying fearlessly true to herself, forging a my-way career based on the honeyed expression of her one-of-a-kind voice and the high-wattage bravura of her presence. Her movie moments are magic (witness "Life's Full O' Consequence," or a velvety "You Won't Forget Me"), but Horne rejected the degrading roles Hollywood often offered black actors, focusing instead on a nightclub and recording career that culminated in 1981 with her Tony®- and GRAMMY®-winning one-woman Broadway show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music (check out the rowdy "Raisin' the Rent").
