California Dreams
Comment:
Like its population, songs celebrating California are astoundingly diverse, and not a little fruity. The Beach Boys were California's musical face during the '60s, and their "California Girls" is as close to a state anthem as you can get, while Neil Young's "Heart of Gold," recorded in Nashville, name-checks Hollywood and Redwood (location of Young's California ranch) and features James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt (both included here in their own right) on backing vocals. Joni Mitchell, and Denny Doherty for the Mamas & The Papas, add a little Canadian into the West Coast mix with "California" and "California Dreamin'" respectively. Little Feat and the Doors unlock the Golden State, in Next Steps.
