Townes Van Zandt
Comment:
No matter how far out Townes Van Zandt's songs ventured, his country and blues roots always kept things grounded, and he wasn't shy about sharing his influences with his audience. Legendary bluesman and fellow Houstonite Lightnin' Hopkins was a crucial inspiration, and the Van Zandt version of Lightnin's "Short-Haired Woman Blues" lets the tune ring out in all its eccentric glory. Townes never did time on a chain gang, but when he sang Hank Williams & Jimmie Davis' forlorn prison ballad "(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle" in his later years, he let his regrets over his own missteps bring the tune to tearful life. But sometimes, Van Zandt tackled tunes from his peers, like when he tapped into his inner hot-rodder on Bruce Springsteen's automotive anthem "Racing In the Streets."
