By 1998, country meant so many things to so many folks that you could get a different description of it from every single fan you asked. For some, it was the twang-soaked Bakersfield balladry of Dwight Yoakam's cold, hard look at love "Things Change." To others, it was Toby Keith dipping a cowboy-booted toe into country-rap territory while waxing philosophical on "Getcha Some." And some people's pick for the sound of country circa '98 would've surely been the George Jones-at-the-bottom-of-a-well tones of baritone boss Randy Travis, with his honky-tonkin' warning of the wages of sin, "The Hole."
