Best known so far for his work as Final Fantasy (a moniker now ditched to spare ongoing marketing mix-ups with the popular video game) Owen Pallett is the classically-trained violinist who bagged the inaugural Polaris Prize in 2006 with He Poos Clouds — an album of inventive string-quartet pieces — and became known in indie circles for his sideline as a strings arranger for the likes of Arcade Fire, the Pet Shop Boys and the Last Shadow Puppets. Here, we by-pass the moonlighting and concentrate on his principal output so far, from first-album track "This Is the Dream of Win and Regine" through excellent EP songs "The Butcher" and the fanciful carousel ride, "Horsetail Feathers," through to the best cuts from his ambitious 2010 release Heartland, a concept piece of grand orchestral scope: check out the prog-proportioned "Tryst With Mephistopheles" and the carnivalesque "Flare Gun."
