November 23, 2008. That'd be the day Guns N' Roses broke 15 years of silence with the shape-shifting insanity of Chinese Democracy. It wasn't the only reason to toast the state of rock music, either. While Jack White kept his axe sharp and his throat scratchy in the White Stripes and the Raconteurs, Metallica and the Offspring released their first records in five years; Slipknot, Linkin Park, and Disturbed lived up to the "new" part of nü-metal; and button-pushing bands like MGMT, Rise Against, and Against Me! brought a D.I.Y.-or-die bent to the very heart of the mainstream. Which is why many rock fans spent 2008 switching between two extremes — everything from the strangely catchy chaos of "Inside the Fire" to the pulse-reducing power balladry of "It's Not My Time."
