Comment:
People have spent the past thirty years trying to figure out what Don McLean's "American Pie" means. For this reason, there are dozens of annotated versions of "American Pie" online, the most popular one being Rich Kulawiec's. So I decided to make a mix which annotates the song MUSICALLY. This mix includes pretty much every song or artist that McLean references, though obviously some of the inferred references are more of a stretch than others. Of course, Buddy Holly dominates this mix because "American Pie" is ABOUT him, but I did try to include an educationally diverse array of musicians because I originally made this mix for a friend who doesn't know that much about oldies. She really liked the way the mix turned out, and I must say I too was quite pleased.Feedback:
Very nice! I would have ended with the Procul Harum song, personally; it's a great mix-ender. Maybe added one of the Beatles' early songs that was more like Holly's rock and roll- otherwise this is hard to improve upon, and it's great that you put it together.
yeah, I totally see what you mean about ending with "Whiter Shade of Pale"-- it is, after all, the last song McLean references, and it's also a perfect summing up-type song. But I wanted to frame the mix with Buddy Holly because he is the focus of the song; also, there's just something so tragic and hopeful about putting "Everyday" at the end of a song about Holly's death. Anyway, I'm glad you like it.
This looks like a great mix. I'd love to get a copy. Would you be interested in any of my mixes?
Same here- I'd love to trade you for this mix.
Some I don't know about, some artists I've heard good things about, and some I know that are good because I know the songs. Great mix
