Comment:
Having resisted for years Rhino's 25-volume 'Have a Nice Day' series of pop/schlock hits of the '70s, I jumped in in June and completed the series in December. Wanted to make a celebratory tape with a selection from each volume. As usual, not so easy. Some volumes had more than one killer, which led to agonizing debates over, say, 'Brother Louie' vs. 'Stuck in the Middle With You.' Meanwhile, some volumes didn't have a bona fide killer, which made me very mad at them, and I ended up skipping a couple discs to ensure that the hits just keep on comin'. Here, then is a pure summation of '70s popcraft. There is much overlap with the esteemed Popkulcher's 'Worst of the 70s' set, about which I'll note that for someone calling this 'the worst,' he sure bought a lot of 'Have a Nice Day' discs. (Title, by the way, nicked from Rhino's box cannibalizing this series plus 70s soul hits and sound clips; nice package in a shag carpet box, but if you're hardcore, you want the whole shootin' match.) This is the cream of what I heard growing up on AM radio, and if you're a forty-something who doesn't find this irresistible, lighten up, man. Fair warning: volume II is already in the works.Feedback:
Nice Eric..., I never felt the need for that Rhino series.., I have waaaaay too much of it on vinyl-either on 45 or lp. Love the Fortunes into the Stampeders, and I've loved that Redbone song since I first heard it, back in...hmm, a shag carpet box? Bring on the Nice....Days!
Nice! Kinda looks like a Replacements' afterhours set list. Already got this one rockin' in my Chevy van & that's alright with me.
Just don't pick up any teenage girls, Jim--Sammy Johns went to jail for that (an ironic footnote). Nice one, Eric. Sorry that I missed it the first time.
